You need to configure the Phone preferences before using SMS.

Configuring the Phone preferences

Tap Applications tab, and tap the Preferences application icon from the Applications screen.
The Preferences screen appears.

Tap the arrow
 at the upper-right corner of the screen and select Phone from the drop-down list.The Phone preferences screen appears.

under “Connection:” and select the connection which has appropriate phone driver. |
Connecting your CLIÉ™ handheld to your mobile phone
You must connect your CLIÉ™ handheld to your mobile phone via Bluetooth® wireless technology in order to send or receive messages on your CLIÉ™ handheld.

Prepare your CLIÉ™ handheld and your mobile phone for Bluetooth® wireless technology communication.
Make sure that the Bluetooth® wireless technology is enabled in the Bluetooth® screen of the Preferences menu.
Refer to the Handbook supplied with your CLIÉ™ handheld for details.
